If you want to learn about chess but find that most books are too hard for a beginner to understand, then this guide is tailor-made for you. Mark M. Wood, one of thirteen individuals in the United States certified as a national chess coach for the United States Chess Federation, explains the game in straightforward language. _ CHESS LESSONS _

Private Lessons:
Students of any age can have private lessons at their home. Parents can be involved and learn with their child for no extra charge. Lessons run from one to two hours. The standing rate is $40 per hour plus transportation costs for students out of the area. As another option, students can meet at local office shops or restaurants in a convenient location.

Group Lessons:
Two students work together for two hours of private tutoring at a player’s home using two coaches. Each student will work one hour online with a USCF expert player. The second hour will involve hands-on tutoring. This is also an option to spend some time playing the other student with coach guidance.

Online Lessons:
Students in any number can work online with Zoom. One or two teachers may be involved in the Zoom call with a pair of students. Parents should be available to assist the student at their home during instruction. A group of students at a remote location can also attend the lesson. This is best done if the group is in one location with an adult instructor present at the site to encourage participation.

_ TOURNAMENTS _

Quad Tournaments:

The players in a quad tournament are divided into groups of four by rating or ability. It is a three-game round robin event where students only play others in the group. Individual trophies are given in each quad.

Main Swiss Tournaments:

A Swiss tournament is usually a large four game event divided into several sections of students with similar ratings. To make the pairings, the roster is split in half by ratings. The top player of the top half is paired against the top player of the bottom half. The pairing continues until all players are paired.

In future games, players are then grouped by similar records and are paired using the same format. In later rounds, students with the most wins are paired together and those with the least wins are paired together making it fair for all players.

Side Events:

Bughouse tournaments are sometimes held before the main event. Bughouse is a game played with partners where a piece that is taken is given to a partner for placement on the board. Games are five minutes with no delay.

Blitz tournaments are held where players are given three minutes to play with an increment of two seconds. After every move, two seconds is added to the clock. Blitz ratings are separate in USCF publications.
